Believe it or not, some insanely cute updos can be exceedingly easy to pull together.
They can be quick and fast hairstyles too – like a couple of minutes fast.
Which might also account for why quick styles like these are so popular.
Yeah, it takes a little practice – but not much.
Yeah, knowing the right tips and tricks helps too – but there’s just a few.
And as the video tutorial shows if you can pull off a pony tail you can do this striking yet simple updo.
It’s one of those somewhat-disheveled-yet-gorgeous hairstyles. Ideal for days when you find yourself having to run out the door but still need to look stylish and put together.
Or you may prefer to save this for special occasions, weddings, or dressy nights out when only a sophisticated, glam, yet natural looking style will do.
Did I mention this is an especially easy to create style?
One that works equally well with long or medium length hair.
Maybe best of all it can also work with short cuts too. And if it doesn’t we reveal 10 more videos each showing how to do a short hair updo that you should check out if you have shoulder grazing or shorter strands.
Now as this 3 minute (really) video tutorial demonstrates this method here is almost foolproof no matter how bad you are at doing your hair. Yet the result is super-elegant.
And again what makes this especially great is it works with any length of hair.
Super Simple Super Fast Updo
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Three or four small clear elastics
- A half dozen bobby pins more or less depending on long your hair is to hold things together
- Texturizing spray (optional)
Here’s the Hair Prep
When it comes to prep if you want a softer look you may wish to curl your hair to add some wave before starting. That wave will also help hold it together.
Another hint? If you have fine hair you may wish to spritz some texturizing or sea salt spray working it into your strands with your fingers. This will give it some grit, hold and added texture. But it’s totally optional.
While you’re at it a little back combing around the crown in the back might help poof up the volume too. Again that too is optional.
Here’s the ‘How to’ Laid Out In 11 Easy To Follow Steps
Yet another hint? The foundation of this look rests on two Topsy tails – placed one just above the other.
Step 1) You first want to part your hair as you normally would.
Step 2) Draw a line with your finger from where your part ends down to just behind your ear to section your hair. This will give you two sections to work with on each side.
Next, flip the sections towards the back over your shoulders and use those for the first pony tail. Secure it with one of your elastics right at the nape of your neck.
Step 3) Create a “hole” using your thumb and index finger. The idea is to create a gap, “hole”, or “pocket”, right above the elastic like you would with any topsy pony. Use your fingers to keep that pocket open as you flip the bottom part of the ponytail up and thru the hole just created.
There, first topsy tail done.
Step 4) Next let’s get you a little volume. Use one hand to pull and gently loosen up small sections of hair above the elastic while lightly holding the hair below the elastic in place with the other.
Doing this creates the appearance of added volume. It also gives the ‘do a more tousled, messy, carefree look.
If you like loosen up some strands on the twisted sides of the topsy tail as well to soften that too.
Step 5) Create the second pony tail. Now take those two front sections and pull them back so they meet at the back of your head. (If you like, now’s the time to pull out a few pieces of hair to frame your face. You know, to soften up the overall look?) Using another elastic form those two sections into the second pony tail right above the first.
Step 6) Make another hole. As before flip the hair up and thru the hole and pull the hair down so you have the second topsy tail. You can flip it a second time if you like to create more twists on the side.
Step 7) Pull the second pony through the hole for the first one. Yeah, while you’re at, it take the second ponytail just created and pull it thru the hole of the first topsy tail.
Step 8) Adjust the first elastic by sliding the elastic of that first topsy tail towards your head to tighten and clean things up a bit. But don’t obsess over how this looks. The bun that comes next will perfectly hide any imperfections.
Step 9) Two more elastics? Okay so at this point those with longer hair will want to use two more clear plastic elastics. (If that’s not you feel free to skip to the next step.)
Wrap one maybe four or five inches down the ponytail to make it much easier to whip that up into the bun.
Then put another at the very end of the pony tail, much like you might with a braid, to keep it all together.
Step 10) Roll your hair on itself. Now as far as the actual bun goes, put the end of the pony on the back of your head and begin to roll the hair on itself towards your head. Think of it as if you were rolling it around a roller. Essentially you’re hiding the end inside the bun.
Keep wrapping until the bun takes shape then tuck the top of it in between the two topsy tails.
You’re going to want to tug at the bun to loosen and fluff it up. The idea is a messy, carefree look here so the less perfect the bun the better actually. Gently pull it apart some making sure it is big and loose enough.
Step 11) Secure with bobby pins. To anchor the bun, pin the underside to the hair in the back right above the ponytail using your bobby pins. How many you’ll need depends on how much hair you have, obviously. If any pieces fall out don’t freak. Just pin them in place.
So that’s all there is to it!
The resulting hairstyle is nothing short of stunning elegance. All pulled together in 5-7 minutes max the first time. Much less each time after that.
Here’s My Truth In Advertising Confession
Unfortunately if your hair has lots of layers you may find this isn’t the style for you as you may have trouble keeping the various layers from sticking out everywhere. Sorry.
But for everyone else, it’s a fashionable style that all but guarantees your friends will be asking just how you did it.
