Oh and don’t miss the video at the very end. It’s perfect for those wondering … ”Can I pull off bangs.” It gives you pretty much all you need to know to decide if you can hack life with brow skimmers.
Then too this graphic also gives you food for thought in your quest for beautification by bangs …
Anyway, let’s get things going with the role the type of bang plays.
Your Commitment Varies By Bang Type
As you know not all fringes are created equal when it comes commitment.
For example the highest maintenance fringe would be a blunt bang. Think those flaunted by Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift. Such bangs aren’t exactly a day at the park both when you are caring for them or growing them out.
So it pays to know how to style blunt bangs if that’s your preference. And you aren’t lucky enough to have a stylist at your beck and call.
While I feel the lowest maintenance winner would be curtain bangs. They are both easy to care for and super easy to grow out.
Not to mention styling curtain bangs is a cinch. You should click that link and read our post about how to do that. If nothing else for the tips we share.
Anyway type of fringe is just something to keep in mind when deciding on what flavor of bang to go for.
Trims Not Optional
Hopefully this one doesn’t come as a surprise.
I’ll bet you’ve likely had friends complaining about the whole trimming bangs thing. Which seem to be something that has to be done every time you turn around. Or at least every two or three weeks – whichever comes sooner.
The perceived reason for this is your hair in the fringe zone will suddenly seem to grow at supersonic speed. Making regular appointments for a trim nonnegotiable.
Luckily some salons will do this gratis. Then it only depends on your willingness to make time to show up. Well, at least if you want to be able to see.
Here again the frequency depends on the type of bang.
Blunt and straight bangs will need more attention than more forgiving curtain or side swept bangs.
Regardless, regular trims are one of the best things you can do to keep them looking fresh and well manicured.
Now for those who can’t be bothered to see their stylist often enough we lay out the step by step of how to point cut bangs at home.
I suggest you at least watch the last video because point cutting is the best way to do this yourself without screwing it up.
While the more adventuresome might benefit from our exploration of how to trim blunt bangs.
Every Day Is Bangs Wash Day?
It may be. Depending on your hair type you may have to become a whiz at the daily “mini wash”.
You know? A quickie wash of just your fringe using a drop or two of shampoo while bent over the sink? Done to freshen up the front face framing bits – even if you don’t lather up the rest of your hair.
Such a step is necessary because your forehead huggers will likely get greasy from a double dose of oils. One from that grease machine you call a forehead. And second from the oils off your scalp.
Not gonna lie. Bangs can end up looking like a gnarly barcode when they get greasy.
So don’t minimize the time commitment here. Because along with the wash comes styling in for the form of blow drying. Or for some straight ironing. If you aren’t ready to commit you likely should pass on the whole bang thing until you are.
Of course that’s not to say there aren’t potential drawbacks to all this attention to your bangs. This article from Marie Claire presents four pitfalls of spot washing bangs.
That said 20 girls responded to a question about washing bangs daily on a hair forum.
16 of them do it every day.
One every other day.
Two used dry shampoo between washes.
One co washed.
Ahhh, co washing. Should you not know what co-washing is our complete tutorial might well bring you up to speed.
Regardless – if you opt to wash up every day you’re not alone.
Proper Training Is Essential | From a Stylist
Watch this 44 second fringe training overview to get an idea of what’s involved.
Obviously there is more to it than that Cliff Notes-like video clip – good as it is.
For the rest of the story we’ve got two posts we wrote because we know training eyebrow skimmers is such a big problem.
So for dealing with defiant bangs how about some help with separated bangs? As this post shows getting them all trained up isn’t as hard as you might think.
Then we go deep into the weeds with this beginner guide on training your bangs. Including an extended take on the additional points shared in this video. Plus some additional tips not seen elsewhere that we threw in for fun.
Bangs Aren’t Always Cooperative
Just a quick reminder that bangs tend to have a mind of their own. Hard to believe, right?
It can get to be quite frustrating. And may account for your love-hate relationship with them.
Plus there must also be an unwritten rule that they get their most stubborn when time is short. Like when you’ve hit the snooze button once too often.
So yeah. Bangs aren’t always cooperative. They couldn’t care less about being ready for prime time or being presentable for being seen in public.
Which means it’s not a question of if your hair won’t cooperate. It’s when. And it’s something not many talk about often. But should.
Surviving The Daily Styling Grind
So given a fringe can be difficult styling is not optional. Ever! Because as was just pointed out bangs are seldom a wash and go proposition.
So a good think-about is how much time you willing to spend styling your hair every day? Because if you’re going to flaunt a fringe this will be a daily chore you can’t ignore.
But that annoyance aside, with practice you can get to the point where you can make them look amazing pretty much every time. If that’s any consolation.
And if not you can always cover up the evidence with a cute head band or beanie.
Taking Care Of Bangs – What No One Tells You
Let’s wrap this up with an excellent video. It covers many of the little unexpected and unimagined twists and turns life with bangs throws at you.
You’ll find she runs through some of the things discovered during her first six months of living with bangs. What you might call stuff that no one warned her to expect.
Along the way she reveals how she styles them and the products used to tame them. All to keep things airy and flirty rather than plastered to her forehead – for most of the day anyway.
Well worth the time. As it makes it crystal clear that going bang is not a decision you want to take lightly.
Oh and if you clicked on a link above expecting to be taken to help with the bottom half of items on that list of topics covered you’re probably wondering
“Hey, where’s the rest of the stuff to know before getting bangs?”
No worries. Honestly felt this was getting a little long. Especially since I wanted to include that video that ties it all together for you here.
So rather than have your head explode from info over load I split items 6 through 11 into another article.
